Polish Bread Consumption Declines

Interesting facts on bread consumption by polish people .It has falling since the year 2008

A report

This year the price of bread has increased by 10 percent which has resulted in lower bread sales in Poland.

Ten years ago, an average Pole ate 80 kg of bread a year. In 2008, the number dropped to 61 kg and in 2009 to 59 kg. It is estimated that this year bread consumption will drop by another 1.5-2 kg per person.

Lower bread sales result from higher prices, say economists. This year, the price of bread has increased by 10 percent, which is directly related to higher price of flour. Even though the price of flour is said to stabilize, difficult times for baking industry remain.

“If bakers don’t take any steps, in the coming four or five years the consumption of bread will drop to 50 kg,” Grzegorz Nowakowski, head of the Polish bread Institute told the Rzeczpospolita daily.

There are about 10,000 bakeries in Poland, of which almost 300 will probably go bankrupt this year. Nowakowski, however, predicts that 200 new bakeries will replace the bankrupt ones.
