All food manufacturing units are now targeting zero waste and zero discharge from their units
including major bakeries across the globe. Waste generated from bakeries includes floor sweepings , dough ,packaging waste . baked product waste etc . Best practices in waste management includes recycling , reuse and reduction in waste generation .Thus reducing the land filling taxes and cost saving s through waste reduction .
Its good news that UB one of leading bakery manufacturer based in UK has achieved zero waste targets . Hope others would follow United Biscuits in getting zero waste from their units .
A Report
United Biscuits, maker of KP Nuts and McVities, has now claimed to have become the first major food manufacturer in the UK to achieve zero waste to landfill.
The company says they have successfully stopped sending waste to landfill across all of their 16 UK sites by reducing waste, increasing their recycling processes and incinerating any residual waste.
In total, United Biscuits has managed to cut 9,000 tonnes of waste sent to landfill since 2006. In 2008, it announced its intention to stop using landfill by 2015, but have now exceeded expectations through rapid progress to reach their goal this year.
Following the recent landfill tax increase of £8 this year to £64 per tonne, businesses that are still sending significant waste to landfill will face hefty costs. This makes the incentive to recycle and take other landfill waste reduction measures stronger than ever before.
Already there are a number of other businesses in the food industry achieving good results – WRAP has reported a 40% reduction in the amount of grocery supply chain waste sent to landfill.
