Parle To Open Bakery Retail Shop s - Parle Shoppe
Drawn by ever increasing rush by investors , businessmen and vc . Parle products have decided to start exclusive retail shops in line of Haldirams and Monginis bakery retails shops selling cakes , cookies and other popular bakery products . There seems to immense potential in these retail shop which allows consumers to select bakery product of their choice and to spend time eating at the same place .Parle might also try to launch packaged cake and chocolates in coming months .
A report
Parle Products, the maker of brands such as Hide & Seek and Monaco, will foray into two new segments of packaged cakes and chocolates in the next quarter. “Parle has plans to launch chocolates and packaged cakes within a month or two,” said a senior company official close to the development.
Distributors of the biscuit maker, which is market leader by volume, told Financial Chronicle that the company’s plan is to diversify its product portfolio in order to cash in on the growing bakery business. Praveen Kulkarnii, general manager - marketing at Parle Products, denied that the company is foraying into the two new segments. “We have no plans to enter cake or chocolates categories,” he said.
Industry officials told FC that Parle has also started its own chain of exclusive retail outlets called ‘Parle Shoppes’.
The outlets are expected to help the company in its first diversification outside the biscuits and confectionery segment. The first such outlet has come up in South Mumbai. Parle’s move to experiment with setting up exclusive outlets aims to replicate the success of Monginis which has exclusive Monginis shops selling cakes, savouries and packaged bakery products. Kulkarnii, however, said the company has no plan to expand its Parle Shoppe network.
The entry into the packaged cakes segment, which is dominated by Monginis and Britannia, is an outcome of the company’s focus on new product introduction to drive growth, according to industry officials. While some of its new products such as Parle Monaco Smart Chips have been a success, others such as Parle wafers and FullToss have been a mixed bag.
The leading players in the chocolate market are Cadburys, Nestle and Amul.
Rivals in the market believe that all players in these segments will benefit when the “pie” increases. Virendra Ghole, GM (marketing and ecommerce) at Monginis Foods, said, “The packaged cake market is driven by distribution. With a mighty distribution set up covering remote parts of India, Parle will be successful in making a large impact on this industry. The market will expand with increased awareness for branded cakes benefiting organised branded firms.

Cookies Vs Gazak's -Winter Does Have Impact On Sales Of Biscuits
While taking my daily dose of Gazaks( sesame mashed with jaggery) , Raibari ( sesame with jaggery) and Gur Ki Patti ( peanuts with jaggery) , Chikki , Til ki patti and relishing parathas ( Indian non leavened bread with oil spread on surface ) for morning break fast I was wondering whether this change of eating habit in winter has any impact on sale of biscuits and cookies which are popular snacking and any time food for millions of Indian house holds . Only hot Pizza's have been able to hold ground as favorite bakery product in winters for Kids .
Personally my house hold intake of baked goods does see a change in favour of these winter delicacies of Gazaks , Til-Patti , Methi ke Ladoos , Gur Ki Patti for snacking and Paranthas instead of ever preferred morning break fast sandwiches .
Talking to retailers I found that they all agreed to fact that the sale of biscuits and cookies have seen fall a of 5- 10% at their stores . People prefer these seasonal products which have added health advantage .Sales picks up only after winter is over
Digging more into these road side vendors business who are seen every where during winter seasons stationed in all major localities.Preparations are done in two - three month in advance to prepare these varieties and then distributed to either wholesaler who sell by stacking up all these products in bags or sacks, Jars for sale .Cart vendors buy these products to sell them to different locality of the city .Season start from month of December and ends by February . Selling price for these product are Rs 120- Rs 200 / Kg . They claim to make profits in range 30 - 40% for these product .Major raw material required are peanuts , sesame seeds , sugar and jaggery. Products of various shape and flavour could be found with these road side vendors such rolls , squares and triangular gazaks with flavours of jeera (cummins seed) ,sounf ( fennel seeds) , dessicated coconut and dry fruits.
Many entrepreneurs had made fortune by catching up with these trends as they pack and market these products to supermarket , mall and food stores . Every sweet shop of repute starts promoting their own product for this season . Most of these items are into non - branded categories except for few pan India brands such as Haldi Rams Gazak .
Local biscuit and cookies manufactures have tried to cater this market with cookies with sesame seeds and peanuts . Can expect manufacturers to innovate and produce some of these products .

Britannia Industries Sued By Kraft Food For Treat -O biscuit .
US-based packaged food maker Kraft Foods on Tuesday sued Nusli Wadia-owned Britannia Industries for trademark and copyright violations of its popular Oreo cookies.
In a suit filed in the Delhi High Court , Kraft said Britannia’s recently-introduced Treat-O biscuit is a copy of its cream-filled sandwich cookies.
The US firm has also sought an injunction to prevent Britannia from manufacturing, selling, marketing or advertising any product with any distinctive element of Oreo cookies.
A Britannia spokesman refused comment saying the company has not received any communication on the issue so far.
This is the second instance in four years when Britannia has been involved in a legal tussle with a multinational food company over trademark. It was, however, playing the role of a plaintiff in 2007 when it had dragged French food giant Danone to a Singapore court alleging trademark infringement of its Tiger biscuit. Subsequently, Danone ended its joint venture with Britannia and set up an independent company in India.
In its suit, a copy of which was reviewed by ET, Kraft has sought damages for infringement of trademark and copyright, passing off and unfair competition of its ‘globally reputed’ Oreo brand of cookies.
Oreo was registered in India in 1991 and is being imported and sold in the country ever since.
Kraft said the Indian bakery and dairy products maker has copied the specific design etchings, such as florets and inner rings, of Oreo cookies. The company refers to the design etchings as ‘Oreo cookie trade dress’.
“The lining on Britannia’s product, inner rings and florets and their placement on the product are identical to the original Oreo cookies,” Kraft said in the suit.
It also alleged that the brand name, Treat-O, with an emphasis on ‘O’, is inspired by Oreo.
Kraft’s lawsuit against Britannia comes at a time it is exploring options to locally manufacture and sell biscuits in the `11,000-crore Indian biscuit market.

Mrs Field's Opens Co - Branded Stores With New Zealand Natural Ice Cream
A Unique concept which has now gained as innovative marketing strategies for companies to cross promote products which are complimentary to each other .Mrs Field's is one of the premier chain offering cookies and baked goods to 390 outlets in United States and 80 bakery chains world wide .
Mrs. Field’s Australia has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with New Zealand Natural Ice Cream to develop co-branded stores in Australia.
Mrs. Fields Australian Managing Director Andrew Benefield announced the deal alongside David Foreman, the General Manager of Emerald Foods which owns New Zealand Natural.
According to Benefield, the product synergies between the two brands made it a logical partnership.
“I believe that co-branded outlets still need to have an offer that makes sense to consumers. Cookies and Ice Cream are a natural fit,” he said.
“There are lots of complementary products we can develop such as ice cream sandwiches, affagato’s and brownie sundaes.”
The new combined operations would also be instrumental in helping the franchisee smooth the daily and seasonal sales curve, according to Benefield.
“Ice cream is obviously a popular item in summer as are cookies in winter. However they are also complementary during the course of a single day as coffee and cookies are strong in mornings, and ice creams and smoothies are big in the afternoon. Both have a very similar frozen goods supply chain, making it an easy fit into rear of house operations.”
Continuously improving sales and the profitability of the franchisee is vital to the success of both companies moving forward, Benefield added.

Julie Bake Shop - A Popular Retail Bakery Chain In Philippines
As I was enquiring about Philippines bakery industry one of the news which drew my attention was an expansion plan of retail bakery chain named " Julie Bake Shop ". With quality products catering to local filipino taste it has made a mark on country bakery market. The country’s largest bakery chain, Julie’s Bakeshop, is adding another 60 outlets to its more than 600-strong branch network next year, as the industry
recovers from the effects of the global recession.
In an interview with reporters
, Julie’s Franchise Corp. president and CEO Joseph Gandionco said the majority of the new branches would be in Luzon and Mindanao, as the Visayas market was now saturated.
As with the current mix, most of the new outlets would be owned by franchisees, he said. Of the more than 600 Julie’s Bakeshop branches nationwide, about 40 percent are company-owned, while the rest are owned by franchisees. Each Julie’s Bakeshop franchise costs P2.2 million, including equipment, seminars, and hands-on training.

A Brief History
The first Julie’s Bakeshop stood in Mandaue City in January 1981. The woman behind the bakeshop chain, Julie Gandioco decided to put up the store to meet the growing demand for bread in her canteen in a rattan furtiture company.
Success proved to be handy for Julie’s Bakeshop that after only six months, the second store was opened in the province.
Then the pursuit to put the company in stronger footing started. In 1984, RJ Commodities was established as a central warehouse for Julie’s Bakeshop to ensure the steady supply of quality ingredients and bakery supplies for the business. Its main operations were initially put up in Visayas and Mindano.
Further in its successful timeline is the opening of a store in Iloilo, its first store outside Cebu, in 1988.
Julie’s Bakeshop has a vision to “be in every town and be the most sought-after Food Franchising Company maintaining leadership in the neighborhood bakeshop market.” This in a bid to address the growing demand for quality bread.Julie’s Bakeshop now has over 500 branches and outlets nationwide and close to 180 franchisees – a testament that the company indeed has molded breads that will bring entrepreneurial success.
“Julie’s Bakeshop offers freshly baked bread made from the finest ingredients. Julie’s products are produced in a clean environment, in full view of its customers. Its products are not only tasty but very much affordable,” the company said in an email to Magnegosyo.com.
Julie’s Bakeshop noted that they keep loyal clients and attract new patrons by maintaining the high standards of quality in both the products and service.
Julie’s Bakeshop now offers franchise opportunities to budding entrepreneurs who see light and flavor in the bread business network. The company noted that enterprise creation and employment opportunities were their motivation to officially go into franchising.
