"Grupo Bimbo S.A.B. de C.V. has agreed to purchase Sara Lee Corp.’s fresh bakery business in Spain and Portugal for about €115 million ($154 million).
“This acquisition underscores our international growth strategy and bolsters our vision of becoming a global leader in the baking industry,” said Daniel Servitje, chief executive officer of Grupo Bimbo. “It will also give us the opportunity to unite the Bimbo brand on both sides of the Atlantic along with the transfer of know-how between the two companies and commitment of our new Spanish and Portuguese associates.”
The agreement includes all Sara Lee fresh bakery brands, including Bimbo, Martinez, Ortiz and Silueta, in Spain and Portugal along with seven manufacturing facilities. In fiscal 2011, the Sara Lee fresh bakery business in Spain had net sales of $408 million.
“The move to Grupo Bimbo is a natural next step that can benefit the Sara Lee bakery team and brands in Spain and Portugal as they would become part of an organization fully dedicated to the bakery category,” said Jan Bennink, executive chairman of the board for Sara Lee. “Divesting the bakery business allows Sara Lee’s international portfolio to become simpler and more focused on coffee and tea, the categories around which we are building a leading pure-play international company.”

Thus, to keep consumer interests alive in the declining mass market biscuit segment, Britannia is re-launching its rusks range.

A report Tata Global Beverages, the owner of the Tetley tea brand, has entered into the UK food market for the first time with the launch of branded scones. The Tetley Tea Folk fruit scones are made with Demerara sugar and plump juicy sultanas and are baked under under licence by bakers Haywood & Padgett, reported just-food. The launch is the first evidence of Tetley's programme to leverage the appeal of the brand with a range of licensed products, the company said. "This is all about developing Tetley Tea Folk products that are the perfect accompaniment to enjoying, making or thinking about Tetley tea," said Tetley marketing manager Anand Gandesha. "It is the first time that we have leveraged the strength of the Tetley Tea Folk in this way and it will be exciting to see how it develops." Kraft Foods Inc To Open New Biscuit Factory In Ukraine


Bloomberg reported that Kraft Foods Inc.  announced that it will invest $36 million by the end of the year to build a new biscuit factory in Ukraine, according to Taras Lukachuk Kraft CEO for Ukraine, Central and Eastern Europe.

The new factory will be based in central Ukraine and will start operating in the fourth quarter of this year.

Currently, Kraft Foods has two plants in the Central Ukraine area that produce coffee and chocolate.

Cargills Ceylon PLC which entered the confectionary industry in November 2010 by acquiring Diana Biscuits Manufactures, which has now been renamed as Cargills Quality Confectioneries (Private) Limited, is to launch the first range of biscuits made to a new recipe under a new brand name.

In his message to the company annual report 2010/11, Ranjith Page, Chairman, Cargills Ceylon PLC, said that this new launch would without doubt excite customers and the industry with its sensational new selection of biscuit varieties.

Page added in his message that the production plant located in Nalanda, Matale is now being modified to develop a wider product range than what was hitherto marketed under the ‘Helan’ brand.

The chairman further stated in his statement that the company is optimistic that the investment would yield above average returns in the medium to long term and is also aware of the initial impact on the bottom line in terms of higher interest costs and turnaround time of the loss making biscuit operations.

Major Bread Brands Of Mumbai To Hike Prices



Alongwith  state  bread manufacturers association . Maharastra Bakery Utpadak Sangh  declaring its intentions to increase prices of bread  by 12% ,major bread brands in Mumbai  has already or planning to hike the price of bread.

Rising input costs have forced Hindustan Unilever (HUL) to hike prices of Modern branded bread by up to eight per cent. Other strong regional brands such as Western India Bakers (WIBS), Monginis and Kwality Bakes Food have also hiked prices by 5 to 10 per cent. “The price of raw materials such as wheat and flour have increased by around 10 per cent since April-May 2011,” said a senior HUL official in know of the development. “We had to pass on the prices to our consumers due to increasing cost pressures,” he said.

Co Branding By HUL And Future Group In Bakery products

CoBranding  as  a marketing strategy has been new to our country  and for bakery products  very few instances where co branding or co development  has been worked out . Its for the first time for HUL  to try this strategy for its  bakery brand -Modern .
The country's largest consumer products company Hindustan Unilever (HUL) and biggest retailer Future Group will co-develop and co-brand a line of bakery products that will be sold exclusively at Big Bazaar stores in the first instance of such a partnership in the country.

The bakery products will sport both Hindustan Unilever's 'Modern' and Future Group's 'Freshly Baked' brands on their packs and be rolled out in select Big Bazaar shops in Mumbai, an HUL spokesperson said.

"This is co-branding of Modern Foods products with Future group in Future Retail stores," the person said.
Co -  branding  is  a new concept  for  bakery  marketing . HUL  and  Future group have entered into  arrangement to Co -develop and Co - brand for   their  BIG  BAZAR  Retail outlets .


Though new in India, the concept is widespread in developed markets. The world's biggest consumer products maker Procter & Gamble has worked with Tesco, the UK's largest grocery store chain, to design Great British Flavours, a line of Pringles sold exclusively at Tesco stores. P&G has had similar tieups with Wal-Mart and Kroger in the US.

Experts foresee more such joint marketing initiatives soon, because it's a win-win deal.

d. Monitoring and Control:

With increasing energy prices, many organizations have incorporated sub-metering systems in their
plants. It is required to identify and monitor parameters for energy consumption per unit of production
or services i.e. Specific Energy Consumption (SEC).SEC monitoring is an important tool for monitoring and
proving of energy conservation measures especially to see the effect of implementation of projects directed towards energy conservation.

With this low-fat, cholesterol-free biscuit brand, the company enters the adult health and wellness food segment, which is worth Rs 5,000 crore and growing at 25 per cent per annum, according to Anuradha Narasimhan, category director (health and wellness), Britannia Industries Ltd.


She said it would be a healthier option for the health-conscious adults, especially women, as a tea time biscuit. The company expects a portion of the current consumers of its Marie brand to switch over to the product and would target the major cities as potential market.

Dar pointed out that ITC Foods was able to disrupt the leadership of Parle in the biscuits’ category, which was primarily lea by the Glucose segment. “Five years ago, ‘Glucose biscuits’, coming at affordable price points and targeted at the masses commanded almost 55 per cent share of the biscuits’ category,” he said, adding, “Today, cookies and cream biscuits are emerging as the largest segment within the category.”

This, he said, was possible when Sunfeast, an ITC brand, along with other players came up with cookies and cream biscuits in smaller packaging, priced at Rs 5. “A market that led for 95 years, crumbled in two years,” he said, referring to the leadership Parle commanded.

Unibic Biscuits India, in which Unibic Australia has a majority stake, is not quite averse to another takeover deal after an earlier bid by Marico was aborted because of valuation issues.
Focus on niche segment

The takeover would have accelerated Unibic's growth trajectory, but for now the company does not want to be ‘distracted by the takeover experience'. Instead, it wants to focus on building the brand in a niche segment that is high on both the price and wellness factors.

“There is a vacant space here as there are no Indian players in this slot,” Mr Nikhil Sen, Unibic's Managing Director told Business Line. The company was launched in 2004 and has brands such as Chocolate Chip cookies (Bradman), Oatmeal Cookies (Anzac), Butter, Butter Cashew, Choconut and Jamz Cookies.

Unibic Australia holds about 65 per cent stake in the Indian company and the rest is held by Mr Sen and private equity investors. Marico's takeover attempt was to acquire an estimated 51 per cent stake in Unibic.

Vadaa Paa is one of the latest entrants in the food kiosk space. The last few years have seen many players such as Burgerman, Nirula's Express (fast food and beverages) and Go Chatzz (North Indian street food), offering both Indian and international cuisine. Parle To Open Bakery Retail Shop s - Parle Shoppe

Parle products  have  decided to  start  exclusive retail  shops  in line of Haldirams  and  Monginis  bakery retails shops selling  cakes , cookies and other popular bakery products . There seems to immense potential  in  these retail  shop which allows consumers to select bakery product of their choice and to  spend time eating at the same place .Parle might also try  to launch packaged cake and chocolates in coming months  .


A  report

Parle Products, the maker of brands such as Hide & Seek and Monaco, will foray into two new segments of packaged cakes and chocolates in the next quarter. “Parle has plans to launch chocolates and packaged cakes within a month or two,” said a senior company official close to the development.
Distributors of the biscuit maker, which is market leader by volume, told Financial Chronicle that the company’s plan is to diversify its product portfolio in order to cash in on the growing bakery business. Praveen Kulkarnii, general manager - marketing at Parle Products, denied that the company is foraying into the two new segments. “We have no plans to enter cake or chocolates categories,” he said.
Industry officials told FC that Parle has also started its own chain of exclusive retail outlets called ‘Parle Shoppes’.

The outlets are expected to help the company in its first diversification outside the biscuits and confectionery segment. The first such outlet has come up in South Mumbai. Parle’s move to experiment with setting up exclusive outlets aims to replicate the success of Monginis which has exclusive Monginis shops selling cakes, savouries and packaged bakery products. Kulkarnii, however, said the company has no plan to expand its Parle Shoppe network.
The entry into the packaged cakes segment, which is dominated by Monginis and Britannia, is an outcome of the company’s focus on new product introduction to drive growth, according to industry officials. While some of its new products such as Parle Monaco Smart Chips have been a success, others such as Parle wafers and FullToss have been a mixed bag.

The leading players in the chocolate market are Cadburys, Nestle and Amul.
Rivals in the market believe that all players in these segments will benefit when the “pie” increases. Virendra Ghole, GM (marketing and ecommerce) at Monginis Foods, said, “The packaged cake market is driven by distribution. With a mighty distribution set up covering remote parts of India, Parle will be successful in making a large impact on this industry. The market will expand with increased awareness for branded cakes benefiting organised branded firms.
